Concrete Dune Residences

Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

The Villa Nouvelle Vague is a Concrete House on Belgium's North Sea Coast

— July 11, 2026 — Art & Design
The Villa Nouvelle Vague is a 330-square-metre residence designed by Magalie Munters Architecture in Oostduinkerke, Belgium. Completed in 2025, the home occupies a corner site beside a protected dune reserve and takes its form from the surrounding landscape. The cast concrete exterior features a horizontal texture that recalls patterns left by receding tides, while the tapered building volume increases garden space and improves daylight across the southern and western elevations. The layout places bedrooms within the dune base and elevates the main living spaces toward coastal views.

The residence organizes circulation around a vertical light shaft that connects the lower and upper levels while bringing daylight into the interior. A rooftop solarium extends the usable living area, drawing on spatial principles associated with Le Corbusier. Concrete forms the walls, staircase, bathrooms, seating, and kitchen as integrated architectural elements, while lime-washed finishes and sandblasted oak introduce natural material contrast.

Trend Themes

  1. Dune-integrated Homes — Residences shaped around protected coastal landscapes point to new opportunities in architecture that blends conservation constraints with premium site-responsive living.
  2. Textured Concrete Exteriors — Tactile concrete surfaces inspired by natural patterns are expanding the role of structural materials as expressive, low-maintenance design features.
  3. Vertical Daylight Cores — Central light shafts that organize circulation and brighten interiors signal potential for denser homes to feel more open without expanding their footprint.

Industry Implications

  1. Residential Architecture — Coastal homes with landscape-derived forms are redefining luxury housing through environmental integration, spatial efficiency, and distinctive material identity.
  2. Construction Materials — Cast concrete used for structure, interiors, and built-in furnishings highlights growth potential for multifunctional materials that reduce visual clutter and construction complexity.
  3. Coastal Real Estate — Properties adjacent to protected natural areas are gaining differentiation through designs that enhance views, daylight, and outdoor space while respecting sensitive terrain.
