Alight is a Recording Device Designed to Preserve Real Conversations

— June 10, 2026 — Art & Design
Alight is a conceptual home device developed by design studio Morrama as an alternative to AI-generated “ghost bots” that simulate deceased loved ones. Rather than creating digital replicas of a person’s voice or personality, the device focuses on recording and preserving authentic conversations while people are still alive.

It is designed to encourage intergenerational connection, Alight archives stories, memories, and discussions that can later be replayed as a record of real interactions. The project was created in response to growing interest in grief technology and explores a more restrained role for artificial intelligence in preserving personal histories.

The device uses satellite technology to detect when loved ones are present and available to talk, communicating this through a subtle ambient glow. A large physical button serves as the recording interface, emphasizing consent and making the capture of conversations an intentional action.

Trend Themes

  1. Authentic Memory Archives — Preserved real conversations offer a compelling alternative to synthetic personas, creating space for products centered on emotional authenticity and long-term family storytelling.
  2. Consent-based Recording — Physical interfaces and intentional capture moments reflect a shift toward privacy-forward design, where trust becomes a differentiator in personal data and home technology.
  3. Ambient Family Presence — Subtle signals that indicate loved ones are available introduce new possibilities for low-friction connection tools that strengthen relationships without constant digital messaging.

Industry Implications

  1. Grief Technology — Ethical remembrance devices could reshape the sector by prioritizing verified memories over AI simulations, appealing to consumers seeking comfort without digital impersonation.
  2. Consumer Electronics — Home hardware that combines simple controls, ambient cues, and emotional utility points to a market for intimate devices beyond productivity or entertainment use cases.
  3. Digital Archiving — Personal history platforms gain new relevance when paired with dedicated recording objects, enabling richer archives built from lived interactions rather than uploaded media alone.
