Middle West Spirits Launches Old Elk Distillery 10-Year-Old Collection

— July 29, 2026 — Marketing
Middle West Spirits, now one of North America's largest independently owned distilleries following its acquisition of Old Elk Distillery in May 2025, has announced the launch of the Old Elk Distillery 10-Year-Old Collection. This series of aged whiskey expressions includes a Straight Bourbon, a Straight Wheat Whiskey, and a Wheated Bourbon, all bottled at a ten-year age statement.

The Straight Bourbon features a distinctive high-malted-barley mash bill of 51% corn, 34% malted barley, and 15% rye, which departs from traditional recipes to deliver remarkable smoothness and layered complexity after a full decade in the barrel. The Straight Wheat Whiskey utilizes a 96% soft red winter wheat mash bill with four percent malted barley, while the Wheated Bourbon combines 51% corn with 46% wheat and three percent malted barley.

Trend Themes

  1. Premium Age-statement Spirits — Ten-year whiskey releases reflect a growing appetite for transparent maturation claims that help premium brands differentiate through scarcity, patience, and perceived craftsmanship.
  2. Alternative Mash Bills — High-malted-barley and wheat-forward recipes signal room for flavor-led experimentation that challenges conventional bourbon profiles and expands consumer discovery.
  3. Independent Distillery Consolidation — Acquisitions among craft-scale spirits producers are reshaping the market by combining heritage-style branding with larger production capacity and broader distribution power.

Industry Implications

  1. Whiskey and Bourbon — Aged collections with distinct grain compositions create new premium tiers where provenance, recipe innovation, and limited availability influence purchasing behavior.
  2. Alcoholic Beverages — Sophisticated releases from independent spirits groups highlight how category players can elevate mature products into collectible, experience-driven offerings.
  3. Luxury Goods — Rare ten-year expressions position whiskey alongside prestige products where exclusivity, storytelling, and craftsmanship support higher-value consumer engagement.
